My hearing colored and meaningful

My name is Fei san and I come From Indonesia. I was born in the city called Surabaya (Suroboyo). I have been using hearing aid or over 20 years. My parents have known cochlear implant information since 1996. They knew it from my cousin who lived in Melbourne. At that time my parents did not take any decision to let me having the operation because the equipment was just found out and they need to first ask some information.

Later on, in 2001 I went to Melbourne to do some check up for 3 weeks. The diagnosed my problem and then they sent the diagnosed result to Indonesia. I was diagnosed as having a congenital severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss at approximately 12 months of age. The cause of I am hearing loss is unknown .I have consistently worn hearing aids since being fitted in both ears at the age of 2 yo. Then I was graduated junior school, high school.

In 2002 I planed to surgery. I met my audiologist whose name mr rod hollow and he said I could have surgery. Then in july 2002, I went to Melbourne and I had my surgery on the 2nd of august 2002 at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. I have operated implant in my left ear. I was operated by Prof Brian Pyman. He was a lovely man and keep to help me to recover soon. I am very proud that God has given me an opportunity to meet him. After the surgery done, I was very happy but I start feeling confused of what I heard, what sort of sounds that I heard, I heard something noisy, whispering and everything sounds mumbling. After that surgery, I practiced listening with mr rod in english while also studying ELICOS in holmesglen institute for 3 months. I have experienced some difficulties in ELICOS especially in listening and speaking different pronunciations. I really enjoy studying in Australia as well as experiencing culture exchange there. After 6 months more I went to back Indonesia.

Saya merasa senang sekali bisa kembali ke tanah air. Saya melanjutkan terapi AVT adalah audio verbal therapy dengan bahasa indonesia dengan Ira. Ia lulusan avt dr singapore. Saat itu saya lg kuliah di uk petra sambil avt sekitar 3 th. Saya belajar mendengar suara-suara selayak bayi dari nol. Sebelumnya saya memakai alat hearing aid pny phonak, saya pernah mendengar suara yg pernah dengar spt suara kendaraan, sebagainya tapi ga begitu jelas drpd alat CI.
